Hi everyone. I found the BerlinBrigade.com Forum by accident. And I have to admit, it brought back a lot of wonderful memories. I am from Berlin.
What I remember is having fun riding bus # 1 from Oskar-Helene-Heim to Mc Nair Barracks and back. There was always a chance to get a conversation started with American soldiers (good for practicing English) (smile)! On we went with the U-Bahn to either Spichernstr. or Wittenbergplatz. And then to the Kurfürstendamm (Kudamm) to visit a club there. Does anyone remember the Riverboat at Fehrbelliner Platz? Of course there was also the Big Eden, Tolstefanz, Metropol and so on.
It also was fun to watch the parades on the Platz des 4. Juli, having fun at the Starlight Club, and the Silverwings Club.
Oh, how I miss the Truman Plaza Shopping Center! There was this Burger Bar, where us Germans were able to eat good tasting American burgers. Not to forget the Outpost Theater where we could watch good movies. Yes, I do have very nice memories of the American troops stationed here in Berlin.
What about the Deutsch-Amerikanische Volksfest?! Did any of you have fun there? I sure did. American ice-cream, rides and just a good time.
After you left, many Germans told me that there is something missing that they were used to for a long, long time.
Across from McNair Barracks is a shopping mall now, McNair Barracks looks old and shabby. They built houses around there – you would have problems to recognize it.
I do not remember the name of the Barracks at Hüttenweg. They are gone – expensive houses were put up there too. Cole Sports Center is still there but very boring now.
The Outpost Theater is the Allied Museum (Alliierten Museum) now. It is very interesting and at least one place is used in a good way to remember the American troops stationed in Berlin.
So, these are my memories.
